An important Internet marketing tip everyone can use is simply to optimize your site for the search engines.
Just what does this mean?
Most Internet marketers think of optimizing their site in two ways: on page optimization and off page optimization.
We'll briefly look at both of these concepts in this Internet marketing tip.
On page optimization has to do with the entire content of each web page. This includes content that is visible as well as content that is invisible to those who view the page.
The most important part of on page optimization is to select one or two keyword phrases you want to emphasize on the page. Trying to optimize your page for more than two keyword phrases dilutes your efforts.
You should be sure your selected keyword phrases appear in various locations on your HTML web page. This will include using keyword phrases in throughout the content of your page.
Most people indicate the important locations you should place your keyword phrases include:
- TITLE tag
- DESCRIPTION meta tag
- KEYWORDS meta tag
- H1, H2 tags
- Body text
- Bold/underlined text
- Link text
- HTML comments
Your principle keyword phrases should be mentioned several times in the body text of your page. Many people say that your keyword phrases should comprise from 1.5% to 3% or even 5% of the text on your page. This is intended to help search engines learn the subject of your page.
The other part of this Internet marketing tip involves off page optimization.
Off page optimization includes other pages on your website as well as other websites.
With off page optimization we are principally concerned with links to the page we are optimizing. Our desire is to have other pages (on our own website as well as other websites) link to our page (or our website) using one of our important keyword phrases as their link text. This means that the text of the link pointing to our page should consist of one of our principle keyword phrases.
This is an important concept within your own website. For example, you will often see many pages on a website linking back to the main "index" page using the link text "Home". This is not helpful to search engines. You should always link back to your main page using a principle keyword phrase that describes the topic of your site.
This link text concept is even more important when it comes to links from external websites. Obtaining links from other websites is one of the most time consuming activities most Internet marketers undertake. The effects of having many external links is that important.
So, how do people go about getting links from external websites?
- Organic links: gratuitous links from other sites recognizing superior content on your site
- Reciprocal links: exchanging links with other sites
- Article marketing: writing articles containing links to your site in the author's resource box
- Web 2.0 site links: creating content on sites like Squidoo with links pointing to your site
- Purchasing links: these are links your pay for on highly regarded sites
Links on other sites pointing back to your site help search engines learn what your site is about.
